On November 19th, 2019, the Symposium on How to Deepen Mutual Understanding between China and Latin American Countries & Launch Ceremony of the Book Latin America (Second Edition), co-sponsored by the China Social Sciences Press, the Charhar Institute and the Latin American Research Center of Shanghai University, was held in Beijing.
At the event
Many former Chinese ambassadors and scholars from China and Latin American countries attended the symposium and discussed with a focus on the people-to-people exchanges between China and Latin American countries.
Jiang Shixue, author of the book, Director of Latin America Research Center of Shanghai University and Senior Fellow of the Charhar Institute, introduced the background of the publishing of the book and thanked the China Social Sciences Press for their efforts. He said that with the rapid development of China's relations with Latin American countries, China's research on Latin America has been deepened, and a large number of academic books and papers have been published every year. However, these academic research works may not arouse the public’s interest. Therefore, it is necessary for Chinese scholars to write some popular reading materials about Latin America.

Jiang noted the relationship between countries lies in peoples' mutual affinity, and peoples' mutual affinity lies in the people-to-people ties, which are not only an integral part of the new international relations advocated by China, but also an important social foundation for the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Only through enhancing the people-to-people ties, can misunderstanding and wrong perceptions be eliminated, and strategic mutual trust between the two sides be built up.
Jiang remarked that there are various ways to realize people-to-people ties, of which the most important is undoubtedly the people-to-people exchanges. In the past decade or two, with the development of economic and trade relations between China and Latin American countries, people-to-people exchanges have been accelerating. However, there is no end to people-to-people exchanges and people-to-people ties. Especially in the face of the unprecedented changes in the past century, China and Latin American countries should adopt various means to further enhance their mutual people-to-people exchanges as well as people-to-people ties.
